Holistic Health - Being in Balance

By Dr. Brett Saks

The health paradigm is shifting. People are tired of being in pain and they are tired of relying on medications to get them through the day. Pain and illness are warning signals that something is out of balance; taking medications to cover up these symptoms has never been a solution, only a temporary reduction of pain and symptoms. Ultimately, this procrastination may allow the imbalance to worsen to the point of dysfunction and disease. If the cover up continues, disability or even death is the result. Our old system is really disease care, not health care.

Only a generation or two ago, it was thought that health, or the lack of it, was “luck of the draw”. We know that family history (genetics) determines susceptibility to illness or disease. However, it is our lifestyle (everyday choices) that truly creates our quality of life. The old and out-dated must be replaced with the new and improved. We recognize that the old paradigm of health is not working, so we must replace it with a newer, more functional one based on all aspects of health.

The new model of health states that the human body is multi-dimensional and comprised of these parts:

Physical - living tissues of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and organs.
Chemical - billions of chemical reactions working harmoniously every second to sustain life.
Emotional - thoughts, feelings, reactions, and perceptions through which we interpret the world in which we live.
Energetic - the subtle vibrational aspects that create 99.9% of our being.
Spiritual - the immeasurable Soul and ultimately the level of our connection with Nature or Creator.

The Holistic model of health recognizes these parts. More importantly, it substantiates that imbalance in any of these areas can lead to any level of symptoms or illness. To be truly healthy, a person must be physically, chemically, emotionally, energetically and spiritually balanced. The work of a Holistic Healer is about bringing people into balance.

Accumulation of stress on any level can create imbalance. Stress comes in many forms and can affect any area of the body:

Physical - trauma such as falls or accidents; posture or repetitive movements.
Chemical - deficient or unbalanced diet; toxicity and environmental chemical exposure/build-up.
Emotional - dysfunctional or unbalanced relationships in the family or at work - self-perpetuating negativity; self-defeating behaviors.
Energetic - environmental pollution by ever-increasing use of electrical devices.
Spiritual - lack of nurturing self and soul; lack of a belief system; purpose.

Healing is about gaining awareness of your individual stresses, reducing or eliminating them and changing your reaction to them, bringing you into balance.

In Health!
